Magnesium hydroxide is a common, inorganic flame retardant that is environmentally friendly.  Its low smoke and non-toxic characteristics make it an attractive option for several applications including furniture upholstery, carpet manufacturing, and textiles which all use Mg(OH)2 as a supplement to the polymeric material which is otherwise combustible.

Polymeric materials are also used in industries such as aerospace and construction where high heat, substantial smoke, and toxic gas is likely; making those materials and resins a fire hazard.  The use of magnesium hydroxide as a fire/smoke suppressant and flame retardant increases the worker and the environment's safety and lowers toxicity risk. 

                                                                                   

Magnesium hydroxide also acts as a pseudo insulator, flame retardant, and suppresses smoke in plastics.   During the endothermic decomposition into MgO and H2O,  magnesium hydroxide pulls the heat away from the plastic and the water released helps to choke the fuel supply.
