Nickel Oxide is useful in pigment, glass, and many other things. It was even used in making the Edison Battery in 1901. With it’s wide uses Nickel Oxide is a part of all of our lives today.
Nickel Oxide, NiO, is famous for being the only well characterized oxide of nickel. NiO helped make up the nickel-iron battery (Edison Battery). It is a component in fuel cells as well. Nickel Oxide was used to make NiCd rechargeable batteries which can be found in many electronic devices. Later the lithium-ion batteries replaced these batteries because they were better for the environment.
Nickel Oxide can be obtained as either a green or black crystal powder. It can be used for making electrical ceramics such as thermistors and varistors and also pigments for ceramic, glasses and glazes. Its most popular use is as an intermediate in the production of nickel alloys.
